The Silent Scream

Ultrasound: A Window to the Womb

Arkes, Hadley. First Things: An Inquiry into the First Principles of Morals and Justice. Princeton University Press, 1986, pp. 360-422. Arkes is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science at Amherst College. Here the author establishes the groundwork of moral propositions and then traces their application to several cases, including a discussion of abortion in Chapters 16 and 17.
Burtchaell, James. Rachel Weeping: The Case Against Abortion. San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1984. In five extensive and challenging ways, Burtchaell builds a sweeping and well-documented case against abortion.
Fournier, Keith A. In Defense of Life. Liberty, Life, and Family Publications, 1994. Fournier, attorney and executive director of The American Center for Law and Justice, has written a compelling book about the devaluing of human life. The author examines current case law on the issues of abortion and euthanasia and provides a ten-point strategy for changing our society from one that devalues life to one that respects and protects all life.
Garton, Jean Staker. Who Broke the Baby? A Brilliant Disclosure of What Abortion Slogans Really Mean. Minneapolis: Bethany House, 1979. A glimpse at a photograph of an aborted fetus, late one night, caused Dr. Garton’s young son to gasp, “Who broke the baby?” This easy-to-read book discusses concepts of the pro-choice movement, such as, “every woman has a right to her own body” and “every child should be a wanted child.”
Glasow, Richard D., Ph.D. School-Based Clinics, The Abortion Connection. Washington, D.C.: National Right to Life, 1988. Dr. Glasow explains how school-based clinics undercut parental authority and have not been proven to reduce teen pregnancies. He also documents how abortion advocates use school-based clinic to promote and refer for abortion and describes successful efforts which have defeated school-clinic proposals in many cities.
Glendon, Mary Ann. Abortion and Divorce in Western Law: American Failures, European Challenges. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1987. In an intriguing and very readable study, a Professor of Law at Harvard Law School examines the experiences of twenty Western national and challenges some widely-held American beliefs.
Glessner, Thomas. Achieving an Abortion-Free America by 2001. Portland, OR: Multnomah Press, 1990. Glessner examines the historical and current status of protection for the unborn and presents a plan, complete with practical suggestions, which would afford greater protection for pre-born children.
Grant, George. Grand Illusions: The Legacy of Planned Parenthood. Brentwood, TN: Wolgemuth & Hyatt, 1988. Grant researches the history, policies, and finances of Planned Parenthood from its founding days to the present. This in-depth study examines founder Margaret Sanger’s eugenic connections and her goal for society to have “more children from the fit and less from the unfit.” Grant also looks at current issues such as the role Planned Parenthood plays in school sex-education courses.

Young, Curt. The Least of These: What Everyone Should Know About Abortion. Chicago: Moody Press, 1984. An examination of the abortion issue in the light of Scripture which offers encouragement and suggestions for the ordinary reader who wishes to get involved in protecting “the least of these.”
